Badass First Trailer for the Pang Brothers’ Storm Warriors

After the dismal debut of Bangkok Dangerous , the Pang Brothers have returned to China for their next film - The Storm Warriors . This is latest their exploration into martial arts - not that they haven’t already featured martial arts in their films, but this is a period epic. For those who have forgotten who the Pang Brothers are, they’re a directing team out of Hong Kong who brought us the original The Eye in 2002, The Messengers in 2007, a remake of their own film Bangkok Dangerous in 2008, and a handful of other Chinese features. And if you’re hesitant about watching this trailer, don’t be, it kicks some serious ass. This reminds me a bit of Kazuaki Kiriya’s Goemon , but not as stylized as that. I’d love to check this out, I think it just looks like some badass martial arts fun, despite being from the Pang Brothers. Thoughts? Watch the first trailer for The Storm Warriors : For more info on the film, check out the official website: thestormwarriors.com The original cast returns in a sequel to Lau Wai-keung’s 1998 The Storm Riders . Wind ( Ekin Cheng ) and Cloud ( Aaron Kwok ) find themselves up against a ruthless Japanese warlord intent on invading China. The Storm Warriors is directed by Hong Kong brothers Oxide and Danny Pang , of the original The Eye , The Tesseract , Re-cycle , The Messengers , and Bangkok Dangerous previously. The screenplay was written by Wing-Shing Ma , who wrote the comic book that the original Storm Riders is based on as well as other comic books like A Man Called Hero . The Storm Warriors is only scheduled to hit theaters in China starting in December of 2009 . This film doesn’t have a US distributor yet, but we hope to hear more on it soon! District 9 Viral Begins to Spread, But No Major Updates

Earlier today I noticed a post on ComingSoon mentioning that an ad for the District 9 viral had started appearing on bus stop benches, but I didn’t think much about. Wen I was out driving today, I passed a few of them, so I decided to stop by one and take a few shots of it (while getting some odd looks). The ad, as you can see below, plays on the non-human segregation idea again, stating that the bus stop is for humans only. And there’s the quirky line beneath it that says: “Beware non-human secretions may corrode metal!” The phone number actually connects with the corporation Multi-National United and it links to D-9.com . The unfortunate thing is that, despite all of this new advertising, the viral hasn’t changed. All of the ads point to the D-9.com website, but that website hasn’t changed since it launched last year . The only difference is that the teaser trailer pops up first before users can continue on into the site. I would hope that they would’ve added something new since it launched last year or would’ve moved the whole viral into its “next phase,” since the movie is due out in less than three months, but nothing has happened. As far as I know, there aren’t any major updates yet. Maybe we’ll see something soon, hopefully? We’ll let you know! Discover More: Opinions , Photos , Viral Marketing

Awesome New Photo of The Fallen from Transformers 2!

Yesterday I stopped by BotCon 2009 in Pasedena to geek out on all things Transformers and I picked up Hasbro’s toy version of The Fallen , the big, bad villain from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen . We haven’t really seen much of him yet, but this guy is a badass, I can just feel it, he’s got the look and he seems really pissed off, and nothing is going to stop him when he gets to Earth. MTV has the first photo “revealing” The Fallen (even though we posted photos of him back in February) but this time it’s an action shot. And for those of you just waiting to hear more about this guy, we’ve got a few more tidbits on him. Shia LaBeouf revealed, in an interview with MTV , some new, sort of spoilerish details, on The Fallen and his origins. “His transportation method is unlike any other robots transportation. The way he fights is also very different and spectacular, visually stunning, really incredible. He is the main dude, he is what all of this came from. Basically, The Fallen was to us, what caveman and neanderthals were. It was the first version of this exoskeleton, it was the first version of this sentient being. That’s essentially what he is, he is the origins of what they come from. He is a badass , you know, he has to be.” Check out the photo and more below. Here is the description of The Fallen from the back of the toy box: For millennia, he has waited. Thousands of years have dragged by as he recruited proxies, one by one, to scour the cosmos for the artifact he required. Now he finds he must return to the primitive, flesh-slug infected planet on which his quest began. Nothing will stand in his way this time. If need be, he will scour the surface of this disgusting world clean in the fire of his rage, and search through the blasted rubble for that which he seeks. I definitely can’t wait to see more of this guy! Unfortunately, it sounds like he’s only a part of the last battle in the movie. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is again directed by action film superstar Michael Bay of Bad Boys , The Rock , Armageddon , Pearl Harbor , The Island , and Transformers previously. The story and screenplay for the sequel was written by Transformers writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci as well as Ehren Kruger ( The Ring , The Brothers Grimm , Blood and Chocolate ). Paramount is unleashing Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in both IMAX and regular theaters on June 24th this summer. We’ll be there! Discover More: Hype , Photos

Cameron Says Avatar Won’t Be Shown the Same Size Everywhere

Most of you may be wondering “what does that mean?” Well, we’ll explain exactly what that means. James Cameron recently appeared at a special showing of The Abyss and Aliens in 70mm back-to-back at a theater in Santa Monica last night. I couldn’t attend (as I couldn’t get tickets), but a scooper over at Ain’t It Cool News did and sent over some details from the Q&A with Cameron. The only interesting thing he revealed was that apparently the 3D presentation of Avatar will be shown in 1.78:1 aspect ratio, while the 2D will be in scope, with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. It’s sort of half of an IMAX conversion (I’ll explain below). The report says that “Cameron never thought he’d shoot a new movie in 1.85 ratio, but he loves the way 3D looks in that ratio, so audiences seeing the film in 3D will get a 1.78 presentation versus audiences who see the film in scope (widescreen) in 2D .” Flat and scope are the two standard aspect ratios in use today. Typically, scope (the wider ratio) is used for action, so that more of it can be captured and it looks much more epic because it’s so wide. Flat (the taller ratio) is usually used for close ups and more personal shots. We’ve included an example photo of the differences in visual size once the image is projected (see below). The reason I referenced IMAX earlier is because, if you look at that image above, you’ll see that you get to see more of the total image when seeing the “flat” or 1.78 aspect ratio version (in 3D). Those of you who saw The Dark Knight know that the screen got much taller when it switched to the scenes that Christopher Nolan shot with IMAX. And it seems like Cameron will be presenting the 3D version in that “taller” format, whereas 2D will most likely be cropped down so that it fits the scope aspect ratio. I’m curious whether this could become controversial again considering the big screen size fiasco with IMAX from a few weeks ago. In addition to that reveal, Cameron humbly said that Avatar “may not make film history, but there are a few shots in the film that he knows for certain will be quite memorable .” He also claims that his CGI special effects “aren’t necessarily revolutionary,” but rather that the way that he shot the movie, with instant in-camera feedback with a rendered image, “could very well change moviemaking.” I don’t mind if he’s humble about all this, because as long as my expectations stay grounded, then I’m likely to be even more blown away in the end. As for the aspect ratios, this is the one time I’ll say that you better see this in 3D ! Discover More: Editorials , Hype , Movie News
