Steven Spielberg Interested in Directing a Matt Helm Movie?
An interesting story about the one-and-only Steven Spielberg has popped up today on Variety . They’re reporting that Spielberg is “seriously considering” directing a project tentatively called Matt Helm . Helm is based on a series of 27 novels written by Donald Hamilton about a government agent whose mission is to take down enemy agents. While the novels were set in the post-WWII Cold War era, the current script is set in the present. The latest draft of the script, written by Paul Attanasio ( Sphere , The Sum of All Fears , The Good German ), was what sparked Spielberg’s recent interest in the project. I like the sound of it so far. The reason why Spielberg isn’t confirmed for this yet is because Matt Helm is one of the (many) projects that were left behind at Paramount when DreamWorks split from the company late last year . Therefore, if Spielberg were to come on and direct, they would need to work out a lot of major issues between the two companies as well as DreamWorks’ new finance partner. Whatever happens, Spielberg will still produce in the end, along with screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Paramount is interested in making the movie, in hopes of launching a franchise, but might go with a less expensive filmmaker over Spielberg. Wikipedia describes Matt Helm as “a U.S. government counter-agent —a man whose primary job is to kill or nullify enemy agents—not a spy or secret agent in the ordinary sense of the term as used in spy thrillers.” The closest Spielberg comparison I can make is Minority Report , considering that dealt with an “agent” of sort whose job it was to prevent murders, although there was plenty of agent nullifying going on near the end. Obviously Matt Helm won’t be set in the future, but I expect it to have a similar feel. To be honest, I’ll be excited for whatever it is Spielberg directs next, whether it’s Lincoln , Indiana Jones 5 , or Matt Helm . Discover More: Movie News , Opinions
Ron Howard to Direct Robert Ludlum’s Parsifal Mosaic
In February we wrote about how Universal was fast-tracking their adaptation of ” The Parsifal Mosaic ,” another spy novel from Bourne author Robert Ludlum. Variety announces that Ron Howard will direct the movie, with a script being written by David Self ( The Haunting , Thirteen Days , Road to Perdition , The Wolf Man ). Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, who has produced almost every single Ron Howard movie to date, will produce The Parsifal Mosaic . Coming off of Angels & Demons , Howard is also attached to direct The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft , The Originals , The Emperor’s Children , and other projects. ” The Parsifal Mosaic “, published in 1982, is an espionage thriller about CIA agent Michael Havelock. At the beginning of the novel he believes he has just witnessed the execution of his partner and the love of his life, Jenna Karas, who had been marked for execution because she had been proved to be a KGB double agent. He retires, but sees her alive at a train station and attempts to find her and unravel a conspiracy. Soon, the agents become involved in an effort to track down the Parsifal, a shadowy figure behind a blackmail scheme. This seems like a great project for Howard to direct - I’m looking forward to seeing him bring this to life. Discover More: Movie News , Opinions

First Brilliant Trailer for the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man
They just don’t stop! The Coen Brothers are already back again with yet another black comedy, titled A Serious Man , following up their CIA black comedy Burn After Reading last year. Out of nowhere comes the first trailer for A Serious Man straight from Apple . Up-and-coming actor Michael Stuhlbarg stars in the lead role as well as funny man Richard Kind as his brother. You probably won’t recognize too many people in this, which is probably a good thing. Considering it’s the Coen Brothers, they’ve got some crazy, twisted, dark comedy up their sleeves, so why not let some incredibly talented unknown actors take center stage. Watch the trailer for the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man : You can also watch the trailer for A Serious Man in High Definition on Apple A black comedy set in 1967 and that centers on Larry Gopnik, a Midwestern professor who watches his life unravel when his wife prepares to leave him because his inept brother won’t move out of the house. A Serious Man is both written and directed by the brillaint Oscar winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen , of Blood Simple , Raising Arizona , Miller’s Crossing , Fargo , The Big Lebowski , O Brother Where Art Thou? , No Country for Old Men , and Burn After Reading . This was shot last year in Minnesota after they finished Burn After Reading . Focus Features will be debuting A Serious Man in limited theaters on October 9th .
