Wunderman Sydney has created what is believed to be another world first initiative as part of this year’s Earth Hour campaign. ‘Plant Spikes’ follows last year’s multi award-winning augmented reality project ‘Earth in Your Hands’ that encouraged more than 35000 people to create a 3D Earth. The 2010 initiative has opened a new media channel aimed at businesses around the country. Plant Spikes is a low-budget environmentally friendly way to reach staff in office buildings and encourage them to get their businesses supporting Earth Hour. To penetrate offices and get maximum impact, Wunderman chose office greenery to carry this year’s Earth Hour message. Their solution was to create spikes that could be “planted” into office pot plants, distributed by plant hire companies during usual watering rounds. In what could be a world first, Wunderman and STI Lilyfield developed a new ink containing natural plant fertiliser that is released to feed the pot plant as the spike biodegrades in the soil. Wunderman CD Matt Batten said the spikes have proved to be a spectacularly simple way of raising awareness of business’ role in creating pollution and getting office workers on-side to help reduce emissions. The message on the plant spikes was simple, ‘I help your environment. Please help mine.’ “The team delivered a triple innovation by using office greenery as a media channel for Earth Hour, then engaging a whole new distribution channel through plant hire companies and the brilliant initiative to develop and use a fertilising ink. They’ve actually produced a piece of marketing that physically helps a small part of the environment.” STI Lilyfield printers developed FSC-certified paper and an organic liquid fertiliser was mixed with vegetable-based inks to create fertiliser-rich ink capable of superior quality print that benefits the plant as it naturally breaks down. According to Nick Tunstall, STI Lilyfield, “The trick was to get a fertiliser that would not damage valuable printing presses, mix with the ink and not affect printability or quality. After much brain storming and hard work, we felt we had the right product and produced an innovative piece of work which we are really proud of.” The fertilising spikes have been distributed by TPR Group, which supplies office plants to more than 1500 businesses across Australia. Wunderman have also helped Earth Hour with a couple of digital elements this year – an web-app that lets you view websites by candlelight, and a Virtual Light Switch as a fun facebook application and a microsite. The Loop is reporting that it is possible the iPhone and iPad firmwares will not unify until fall of this year. The iPad will release with OS 3.2, but The Loop is suggesting the iPhone OS will not be updated until the summer, with the release of new hardware. The iPad OS, firmware 3.2, has been designed specifically for the iPad, with many new UI changes, and the addition of “pop-overs”. It doesn’t really make sense for Apple to release this firmware for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Instead, we will most likely not see an update for the iPhone until the summer, when a new iPhone, and probably OS 4.0 are released. Then, when a new iPhone is released, that OS will be specifically designed for the new iPhone, and probably iPhone 3G and 3GS, making it unlikely we will see 4.0 on the iPad. This is why The Loop is not expecting all Apple’s touch devices to be on the same firmware until later in the year. Let me add to their speculation by saying, does the iPad ever have to be on the same firmware as the iPhone and iPod Touch? Obviously, the iPad OS is very similar to the iPhone, but there will always be distinct differences, just because of the size of the screen. Some developers have been starting from scratch with the iPad, rather than just re-vamping their iPhone apps. I think these could be two separate markets. Another batch of iPhone apps are, apparently, about to get the axe. Reports are popping up around the net, that “cookie cutter” type apps are starting to be pulled from the App Store. This would include RSS apps, and photo gallery type apps. Any app that just packages an online service, and doesn’t offer any other functionality. It was just a while ago the Apple was bragging about 100M apps in the App Store, but the past few weeks seem to contradict that, with all the cuts. First we heard about the so called “explicit” apps being pulled, then WiFi stumbling apps were purged, and now the “cookie cutter” apps are starting to go. Personally, I’m looking at this as a good thing. Not good for developers, but good for consumers. Sure there are a lot of apps to choose from, but so many of them are just the same as another app, that is the same as something else. As a consumer, I would love to see less “crap” and more useful, functional applications. As a budding developer, I can definitely see the other point of view, but I think this could push developers to be more thoughtful and work a little harder on their end product. So, you may be asking, “What the heck is a cookie cutter app?”. Basically, it is any app that just creates a new user interface for a service that is already available in another form. RSS apps are notorious for this. An RSS feed is pretty much the same, no matter what kind of “packaging” you put it in. Developer Hooked In Motion recently released version 2.0 of ”iCollect Movies”. This app allows you to scan the barcode of your movies with your iPhone’s camera. It then queries it’s database and automatically adds the title to a easy to read catalog, including information like genre, rating, run time, and much more. Here’s a full feature list: - Scan in your movies via UPC using the built-in camera. - Manually type in the UPC. - Manual entry with no barcode. - Spiders Google and our own servers for a cover and information about a title. - If no information is present, take your own picture and type in the details and add it to our server for others to use. - Use a picture from anywhere on the web for your covers. - Use a picture from your Photo Library. - IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes links - Add it to your library. Sort by Blu-ray, DVD, or customize your filter bar right from the main screen. - Tab badges allow you to quickly see how many movies you own. - Sift quickly through your catalog using the index. - CoverFlow. - Library view. - Backup/Restore - Shake for random movie. - Sort without The and A option. - Loan your movies out and keep track of who has what using your contacts list or custom entry. - See movies you’ve never watched or watched a long time ago using the “Last Watched” feature. - Entry for purchased value and date. - Options for Actors, Directors, Regions, Audio, Subtitles, and more! - Customs which information is displayed in your movie cells. - Add a movie to a wishlist if you know you want to buy it in the future. - Email out your wishlists to family and friends for holidays and birthdays. - Already ordered a movie but don’t have it yet? Add it as a preorder. Add the release date as well. - Incredible search capabilities. Browse through your library in a whole new way. Want to see all movies you have that star Steve Martin? Easy. Want to see all of your Japanese movies only? Easy. - Video tutorial for help. - A LOT more! I use this app to catalog all my DVD’s, BluRay’s, and HDDVD’s (yes, I still have HDDVD’s ). The camera scanning is impressive. It scans just like a bar code scanner you might find in a commercial context, even including a “beep” sound to confirm the scan. Every scan, for me, has been very accurate, but if you happen to have a rare movie, that is not in their database, just manually enter the information your self, and it is uploaded to the database. This app works with all iPhone cameras, but probably works best with the iPhone 3GS camera “iCollect Movies” is available now, in the App Store, for $2.99. Due for release this month is, “iCollect Video Games”, to catalog your XBOX 360, Playstation 3, and Wii games. Other similar apps in the works, are iCollect apps for music, books, comic books, Lego, Barbie, Beanie Babies, and wine. Wow! What a grand platform, and what a great way to debut the first of iPad commercials. Steve couldn’t have a better event than a glamorous Oscars night, which is full of high-profile celebrities to wrap off iPad’s first public commercial. Steve Jobs himself was also present at the event when the commercials went Live. The 30 seconds commercial, which shows off visual side of iPad can be seen as embedded below. You can also watch it directly on Apple.com . A very well thought idea, and a perfect place to start iPad’s media campaign. Last week, Apple announced the official release dates for the much hyped iPad. The WiFi models of iPad will be available on retail starting from 3rd April, it will also be available for pre-orders starting from next week on March 12th.
